model making can't really be taught in my opinion, it just comes to you and will get better as the years go on. sketching while traveling in my opinion is essential, and I always do it. however any form of documentation is good its up to you. my only advice on architecture is its a profession that you must love otherwise its not worth the at times torturous amounts of work and lack of sleep. also for someone entering the field, trust me on this, try to look at it not as a building but as an art form, gives a whole new perspective.
